It may be the second smallest state in the country, but Sikkim is huge on beauty! Located in the eastern part of India, bang on the feet of the mighty Himalayas, the Sikkim area is one of the prettiest destinations for honeymooners. Want gorgeous snow-capped mountains, lush green valleys and flower strewn locales…this may be the ideal honeymoon destination for you. Why break the bank and the wedding budget for a trip to Europe, when Sikkim could rival any Swiss mountain adventure.
A romantic escape to the state of Sikkim will give you just that – romance and tranquility. Unlike other hilly tourist destinations, it is still peaceful here and since it is nestled within the lofty Himalayas, quite extraordinary. Bordered by Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan, Sikkim is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty and a melting pot of cultures that separate it from mainstream India. The main towns and districts include Gangtok, Geyzing, Mangan, Namchi etc. The state capital of Gangtok serves as a connecting point for many scenic sojourns you plan in Sikkim. Since there is no airport or railway station here, you will have to enter Sikkim by road from the state of West Bengal which also borders it. A true getaway this!
As you probably have guessed, this isn’t the place for honeymooners looking to party…but there is a lot to do and see here especially when you are coming from a busy metro. Nature and adventure trips abound here. You can enjoy the beautiful views of the highest peak of the Indian Himalayas – Kanchenjunga while you sip on your morning cuppa and set out for picturesque escapades within the region. There are tons of outdoorsy activities like trekking, paragliding, river rafting, rock climbing and more, that you and your spouse can enjoy on your stay here. The state is also bountiful in flora and fauna and makes a great destination for eco tourists from around the world.
Other sights you can catch are the lovely Buddhist monasteries strewn around the state like the Rumtek and Enchey monasteries. Close to Gangtok lies the Tsongmo Lake, which is also considered a sacred water body. The Gurudongmar Lake is close to China and is found at an altitude of over 5000 meters and is a pristine and stark sight to see. Do find out what permits you need to visit both areas. Another must-visit is the Nathu la pass which lies at over 14000 feet. The scenic and somewhat scary drive there is awe-inspiring, with many gorgeous sights and stops on the way. However, the Nathu la pass is open only for Indian citizens and at limited times of the week and the year. You can also check out the therapeutic hot springs in the Yumthang valley area. These are just some of the sights to catch here…frozen waterfalls, flowery landscapes, mountain peaks, sacred spots and historic sites, this honeymoon spot isn’t short of things you can experience as a couple.
